So you have managed to survive the first two rounds of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament relatively unscathed. Sure, there were the couple upsets you missed, or a few that you picked that ended in blowouts for the higher seed.
But for the most part, you did pretty well. Your eventual champion, and two or three more of your FInal Four teams, are still left in your brackets. At your sportsbook, you are up, because you did not fall into too many traps.
After the craziness of the first long weekend of the tournament, the Sweet 16 games will take place on Thursday and Friday of the second weekend, with the winners moving into the Elite Eight, just one game away from a trip to the Final Four.
While the Round of 64 games (called the Second Round, with the First Four games in Dayton the “First Round”) brought upsets, the Round of 32 started to bring some semblance of order back to the tournament, although some double digit seeds managed to sneak through to the Sweet 16.
Sweet 16 NCAA Basketball Betting Predictions & Strategies
Here is a look at some strategies to use when placing your bets in the Sweet 16 NCAA Basketball and making predictions.
1. There will be some top seeds to go out, but do not bet against all of them.
This Sweet 16 tournament has been won by higher seeds. In the last 35 tournaments, 31 have been won by teams seeded one, two, or three (89 percent). Top seeds have won the tournament 22 of those 35 times (63%), but over the last two decades, that number is even higher: 11 of the last 15 (73%) and 15 of the last 21 (71%).
2. Top seeded teams have been dominant in this round over the last five years.
Since 2015, top seeds are 15-1 in Sweet 16 games.
3. The Cinderella 12 seeds turn into pumpkins in the Sweet 16.
Everyone at this point knows that the five-12 games in the second round are rife for “upsets”. In fact, when the lines come out for those contests, they are usually very close, and sometimes, the 12 seed is even a slight favorite.
But when those teams get to this round, the wheels come off the carriage, because they are in the same half of the bracket as the top-seeded teams. Twelve seeds are 1-20 in the Sweet 16 (0-20 against top seeds), with the lone win coming two decades ago (2002, Missouri).
4. There are some upsets you can still count on in this round.
While the 12 seeds almost always lose, the seeds just ahead of them have found a way to keep playing. If you take a look at the last decade (2010-2019), at least one team seeded seventh (two), eighth (one), ninth (one), 10th (one), or 11th (two) have found their way to the Final Four.
5. If you have to choose between two and three seeds, go with the two.
Second-seeded teams have found a way to win these matchups, to the tune of 63 percent (29-17).
