Which New Jersey baseball teams should I never bet on?
There are no Major League Baseball (MLB) teams based in New Jersey, only minor league teams. But there are three teams that are based just outside of the state, and all three will be interesting to watch this year. In the National League East, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are two of five teams, which also includes the defending division champion Atlanta Braves, the Miami Marlins, and the Washington Nationals.
The Mets and Phillies both spent a lot of money to improve their teams in the offseason and should be much more competitive this year.
In the American League East, the New York Yankees, baseball’s most successful team with 27 World Series titles, will look to win their first championship since 2009. But they have the defending champion Boston Red Sox in the division, as well the Tampa Bay Rays, one of baseball’s surprise teams in 2018. The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays are the other two teams in the AL East.
Unlike other sports, even bad teams can be worth betting on certain nights, due to pitching matchups. Even though the Mets did not have a great record last season, they had the Cy Young Award (best pitcher in the league) winner Jacob DeGrom. When he pitches, the odds often favor the Mets.
