Prominent College Teams in Houston
It was a good year for the University of Houston. And not so much for Rice University.
Houston went 8-5 in football but lost four of their last five games after an impressive 7-1 start to the season. They want to a Bowl game but got trounced by Army. New head coach Dana Holgersen, who left West Virginia to join the Cougars, will look to take the team further in 2019.
In basketball, the Cougars had a great season. They went 33-4 during the season, easily won the AAC and made it to the NCAA Sweet 16 before losing to prevail power Kentucky.
Rice, playing in Conference USA, went 2-11 in football and 13-19 in basketball. Obviously, the Owls are looking to get better in both in 2019 and 2020.
Sports Betting in Houston
State law in Texas allows for bingo, lottery and horse race betting but as of 2019, it was not legal to bet on sports in Houston, or anywhere in the state of Texas.
New Mexico, which borders Texas to the West does offer sports betting and residents of West Texas can cross over the border to wager legally. They could also go to Oklahoma, which also borders Texas and where sports betting is legal at casinos in the Sooner state.
The closest casinos in New Mexico is Zia Park Casino and Racetrack. The closest one in Oklahoma is WinStar World Casino and Resort.
Right now there are no licensed or regulated ways to bet on sports in Texas and residents are not all the optimistic that will change soon.
Although technically not sports betting, it is legal to play daily fantasy sports on sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel. Citizens of Dallas can start betting online on fantasy basketball and football teams by signing up with Draftkings which offers a $5 welcome bonus for all new customers.
This is looked at two ways, but since existing federal laws and Texas gambling laws do not criminalize the act of betting at offshore online sportsbooks, it is legal for residents to bet on sports events online at any non-US-based sports betting website. Texas itself does not have any online sportsbooks.
