Michelle Waterson Can Pull Off Angela Hill Upset in UFC Fight Night Main Event

Michelle Waterson will attempt to cease a two-loss slide when she faces Angela Hill in a women’s strawweight main event at the top end of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card.

Both fighters are coming off defeats entering this matchup, which was promoted to five-round, main-event status after a light heavyweight clash between Glover Teixeira and Thiago Santos was cancelled, per Ariel Helwani:

Her last two losses came against a high standard of fighter in Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Carla Esparza—each by decision—having beaten her previous three opponents via the judges’ scorecards prior to that.

Hill (12-8), who suffered a split-decision defeat to Claudia Gadelha in May, holds more knockout potential out of the pair, but Waterson’s only professional loss via KO came back in 2009.

These two fighters post a combined age of 69, with Hill just one year her opponent’s elder at 35. The duo each boast substantial gas tanks but have limited experience fighting over five rounds, a major factor that should see conditioning come more into play during the fourth and fifth if we make it that far.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt Waterson would appear to hold the advantage on the ground considering she has nine submission wins—her most favored method of victory in 25 fights—while Hill has never finished a foe via those means. Expect this to be the area in which the underdog looks to take her advantage, possible during those later rounds in an attempt to nullify Hill’s stand-up.

Waterson is also looking to avoid recording three successive defeats for the first time in her career, while the chance to climb from eighth in the strawweight rankings  (Hill sits 13th) is added motivation.
