US vs Netherlands Odds and Predictions

After 90 tense and nervy minutes, the USMNT prevailed in their final group contest against Iran, qualifying for the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup.

The lone goal came on a heroic effort from Christian Pulisic, who edged the ball across the goal line just before taking a shot from Iranian keeper Ali Beiranvand forcing him out of the second half. His status will be crucial heading into Saturday’s tilt.

The US  will meet a soccer powerhouse in the Netherlands in a single elimination win-or-go-home format. Can the magic run continue, or is this the end of the road?

Here’s a closer look at this US vs Netherlands World Cup showdown as well as some excellent online sportsbook promos to consider.

USA injury list: Will Pulisic be fit for the game?

The official injury designation for Pulisic is a “pelvic contusion.” His current status is listed as day-to-day.

He has already stated that he will be ready to go for the Round of 16, and the coaching staff has echoed this sentiment.

Nonetheless, his status is worth monitoring. As the USMNT’s top man, he is one of the few players capable of singlehandedly shifting US Netherlands odds.

Players to watch from both teams

Here are some key players to watch heading into Saturday’s tilt:

USA

  • Christian Pulisic
  • Tyler Adams
  • Weston McKennie

While they lack a bonafide striker up top, and the defense has looked shaky at times in this tournament, the midfield has been excellent for USA.

Pulisic will deservedly get a lion’s share of the media coverage heading into the knockout stage. He is unequivocally the best player on the team.

However, it was McKennie’s excellent ball to Sergenio Dest that helped create the goal-scoring chance in the win over Iran. The question for McKennie is how much run he will get on Saturday. He has routinely been subbed out around the 70-minute mark so far in the World Cup as he works his way back from an injury.

Team captain Tyler Adams continues to be a stabilizing force for the US and will no doubt be a crucial piece if the US is to spring an upset here.

Netherlands

  • Cody Gapko
  • Memphis Depay
  • Virgil Van Dijk

Holland found the back of the net five times during the group stage while conceding just one goal.

Gapko and Depay represent a pair of dangerous strikers that look poised to challenge the US defense on Saturday. Gapko has scored a goal in every Dutch game thus far in the World Cup, while Depay is still looking to open his tournament account.

Van Dijk is a lockdown defender that will look to put the kibosh on any US attack.

US Round of 16 Record

Getting out of the Group Stage is usually seen as the barometer of a successful World Cup for the US.

In 11 World Cup appearances, they have reached this stage six times. They have historically struggled at this juncture, qualifying for the round of 8 just twice and only once since 1930 (2002 Japan/Korea).

The US did not qualify for the World Cup in 2018 but managed to reach the round of 16 in 2014 and 2010, bowing out there in both instances.

What Happens if there is a Tie?

Unlike the group stage of the World Cup, the knockout stage requires a winner in order for a team to advance to the next round.

If this US vs Netherlands World Cup match remains tied after 90 minutes, the teams will play an additional 30 minutes of extra time. If it is still deadlocked at that point, the match will be determined by a penalty shootout.

Those looking to bet on the game should consider the odds for the 90-minute moneyline as well as the overall odds to advance. If you bet a three-way moneyline, your bet is graded only by what happens during regulation.

USMNT record in WC penalty shoot-outs

During their 11 World Cup appearances, the USMNT has never faced the prospect of a penalty shootout. Could this be the year?

It’s worth noting the US owns a 4-3 record overall in shootouts in other competitive tournaments.

Netherlands record in WC and Euros penalty shootouts

Unlike the US, the Dutch are no strangers to penalty shootouts. As perpetual tournament contenders, the Netherlands has had many deep World Cup and Euro runs.  However, they have not fared well historically. Here’s a look at their overall PK record:

  • World Cup: 1-2
  • Euros: 1-3

If the game were to go to a shootout, would Holland’s past experience be an advantage or a dark cloud looming over them?

Best Odds for the Game

As previously mentioned, there are several different odds you can wager on for this USA vs Netherlands World Cup game. Some popular ones include:

  • Three-way moneyline (90 mins)
  • Two-way moneyline (90 mins)
  • Odds to advance (including ET and PKs)

You will always find better odds when betting on regulation outcomes; however, there is more risk attached. The US has already shown they can go toe-to-toe with a world superpower in this tournament (England), so it wouldn’t come as a shock to see this game go into extra time.

Our Prediction on USA vs Netherlands

This should be a tight game and a riveting contest. While Holland possesses more talent up and down their roster, the US has arguably been the more impressive side thus far in the tournament.

  • Draw no bet (USA): +220 ( a push if tied after 90 minutes)

  • US to advance: +194 (final game outcome)
