Illinois Online Sportbsooks

New laws have just been passed in Illinois, so you can expect the launch of many top-rated sportsbooks in the coming months and 2020. You will have to create your account at land-based casinos and racetracks and after that, you can manage your account online.

Iowa Online Sportsbooks

Like Illinois, Iowa legalized sports betting in 2019 but has not launched any online sites at this time (it is set to launch in August 2019). You will also have to visit land casinos and racetracks when you first set up your account.

In addition to these states, Indiana, Oregon, and Tennessee have all passed laws that will allow for the operation of online sportsbooks in the state. However, there are none operating at this time.

While many states have already taken action, many more are in the process of devising laws that would allow sportsbooks to enter the online betting market. Delaware is one of these states. Delaware was one of the first states in the country to offer online casinos back in 2013, but they have yet to pass laws for online sports betting.

New York has just passed a bill legalizing sports betting (Turning Stone Sportsbook and Casino opened in NYC). Michigan has become the 20th state with legal online sports betting, so you can expect some great sites to begin to emerge.

Even though a number of states have legalized sports betting within the borders, not all of them have legalized online betting.

However, many states are currently working on laws that will allow for online wagering to take place. For now, you can enjoy online sportsbooks in the states of New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Nevada.

Lawmakers in Michigan were aware that locals can drive a mile across the border to Indiana to place sports bets. That is why Michigan simply legalized sports betting and online casino gaming 10 days before 2020.

In the pipeline are bills that would legalize fantasy sports gambling and online betting. However, bets would be restricted to the state’s tribal casinos and larger casinos based in Detroit.

Can I bet on college sports in the US? You will find that leading sportsbooks will allow you to place wagers on college events across the United States.

This includes being able to bet on March Madness, which is one of the most popular college tournaments played each year.

Each state is allowed to set specific laws pertaining to college betting. Some states will not allow you to wager on college events or teams in the state, while others do not have any restrictions at all. New Jersey is one state that does not allow residents to wager on any NJ-based team or college event taking place in the state.

States like Pennsylvania, Nevada and New Jersey now allow bets on individual college sports after the rules were relaxed.

DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings began as a daily fantasy sports betting site and has now entered the traditional sports betting market. In addition to being able to bet on fantasy sports competitions, you can also place standard bets on professional and college sports across the U.S., as well as international events. DraftKings began operating in New Jersey but is also available in Pennsylvania, and the company has plans to enter other states.

Over 100m viewers tune in to the Super Bowl, and in 2019 it is estimated that nearly $200m of bets were placed on the game across bookmakers in Nevada and New Jersey. Let’ see about 2020 Super Bowl.

US gamblers can now place bets on the Super Bowl via legalized sportsbooks online in New Jersey, PA and Delaware. Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) sites also offer markets and big-money guarantees on the match outcome and props.

WHEN TO GAMBLE on Super Bowl: February

TOTAL WAGERED (estimated): $181 million (2019 Super Bowl)

Online sports betting has long been a top choice for sports fans all over the world, but it wasn’t legal to engage in sports wagering in the United States until 2018. The legal landscape changed in May 2018, when the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated the PASPA, a federal law that was in place that banned single-game betting activities. Now, each state in the country has the ability to set their own laws pertaining to online sports betting. A number of states have quickly jumped on board and are offering top-rated betting sites so you can wager from the comforts of home.

Each state will have different laws in place, so it’s important to check these before registering at any online sportsbook. Some will allow online and mobile wagering, while other states may only offer online sportsbook access. Most states are liberal with the laws and you will find you can place wagers as long as you’re within those borders.

You do need to be aware that accessing an online site or a mobile app does not mean that the same app will work in another state. Each sportsbook is required to be licensed and regulated by the state, so you cannot engage in wagering if you are not physically located in the U.S. state that is offering legal sports betting.

The change began in the state of New Jersey when voters passed a referendum back in November 2011 allowing the state to legalize sports betting. A bill was quickly passed that would regulate this form of wagering at Atlantic City casinos, as well as racetracks located throughout the state. The bill was actually signed into law by Governor Chris Christie. However, problems quickly arose.

Many of the major sports leagues challenged the state of New Jersey in court and said the state was not allowed to offer sports betting due to the PASPA regulations. A lower court ruling finally sided with these leagues, and sports betting did not become legal in the state until quite a few years later.

After appealing court rulings and losing its rights in New Jersey, sports betting took a back seat until May 2018. At that time, The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case from New Jersey and the state won, resulting in the repeal of the PASPA. More details regarding the case and the timeline can be found here.

New Jersey also had the support of the American Gaming Association, a lobbying group that supported the repeal of PASPA and advocated for individual states to have the ability to write and maintain their own sports betting laws.

The Difference Between Sports Betting and Daily Fantasy Sports Betting

If you are new to the world of sports betting, you may wondering what the difference is between traditional betting and wagering on daily fantasy sports. DFS betting sites are legal in more than 40 states across the country and there are some major differences between these two forms of betting. With traditional sports betting you will choose a team or various teams to win an event or cover a specific point spread. When betting on daily fantasy sports, you choose athletes and enter a competition. Winners are based on stats accumulated as those chosen athletes perform in real games and sporting events.

How Professional Leagues Stood in the Way

Various professional sports teams had strong opinions in regards to whether sports betting should become legal throughout the United States. Each league had a different stance, and we take a look at these below:

NBA & Sports Betting

The commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver, was strongly in favor of sports betting becoming legal. In fact, he hosted many discussions that pertained to the topic long before the repeal of the PASPA. Prior to and following the decision of the Supreme Court, the NBA wanted to get a cut of sports betting money from various states in 2018 and after. They were the league that introduced an integrity fee.

NHL & Sports Betting

The NHL was also in support of sports wagering, and they had a marketing agreement with MGM Resorts. The commissioner of the NHL stated that the league wanted federal legislation along with a slice of the money that was spent betting on professional hockey games. In 2017, the NHL introduced a new franchise located in Las Vegas, making this the first pro team the city has ever had.

MLB & Sports Betting

When it comes to sports wagering, the MLB is quite sensitive and they do not support wagering on games that take place. However, after the repeal of PASPA, the MLB started to slowly come around, especially after the introduction of integrity fees that would be paid to the league. The MLB also signed a deal with MGM Resorts, providing the company with exclusive rights to data to be used for in-play betting.

NFL & Sports Betting

Perhaps the largest and most powerful professional sports league in the country, the NFL was and is not in support of sports betting. It actually fought against it for decades and is seeking legislation even after PASPA was shot down. Oddly enough, the NFL does not advocate for any integrity fees. The NFL remains the only professional league that has no investment with daily fantasy sports.

NCAA & Sports Betting

Aside from the opinions of professional sports leagues, the NCAA also had a take on sports wagering. Despite March Madness and college football drawing the attention of millions of sports bettors each year, the organization is strongly against sports betting. There is a ban on national contests held in any state that has legalized sports betting. The NCAA also does not promote fantasy sports and does not allow any student-athletes to engage in any contests.
