Head-to-Head – Philadelphia Stars at Birmingham Stallions

There’s a lot to like about the Stallions heading into this matchup – they lead the league in points with 195 through seven games, have allowed the second-lowest number of points at only 137, and are 3-0 thus far against teams in the North division. They’ve won both of their last two games, including a 24-20 victory over a New Orleans Breakers team that failed to score a touchdown against them until the fourth quarter.

Alex McGough provided the team with another consistently positive performance, completing 16 of 23 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown in addition to gaining 22 yards and a score on seven rushing attempts. C.J. Marable performed well as both a runner and receiver, leading the team with 86 yards on 17 carries and 52 yards on six catches. Quentin Poling provided an exceptional defensive performance as well, racking up 11 total tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks.

The Stars, for their part, looked stellar on offense last week in their 37-31 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers. Case Cookus threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns while completing 60 percent of his passes, and Matt Colburn racked up 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 carries. It was a welcome offensive breakout performance for a squad that, despite their winning streak, had only totaled four offensive touchdowns over their last four games heading in.

The Stars have narrowly outgained the Stallions in passing yards this season, but the Stallions boast the second-highest overall yardage mark at 314.3 per game while the Stars rank sixth at 270.3 per game. While the Stallion lead the league in points scored, the Stars rank fourth with 143 – good for the best in the North but only a single point ahead of the fifth-place Memphis Showboats. More strikingly, the Stars have allowed a league-high 171 points on defense,
