Head-to-Head: Washington vs Oregon State

The Huskies have dominated their rivalry with the Beavers over the past several years, winning 9 of their 10 meetings since 2013. That said, the gap between these teams was shortest in their past three meetings. Oregon State won their meeting with Washington in 2021 by a 27-24 margin and only lost 21-24 in the 2022 season. The teams are split against the spread over their last ten meetings, with Oregon State covering in each of the last three. The points have also trended down over the years, with the teams not having hit the over since 2018.

Both teams have been dominant through the 2023 season despite stiff competition from the rest of their conference. Washington remains undefeated and a strong contender for the College Football Playoff, but they’re only 1-5 against the spread in their last six games. The offense is still dominant, averaging 503.9 yards and 41.0 points per game on the season, and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. helms a passing offense that leads college football in passing yards with 378.0 per game. Regardless, their last six opponents have each held them within 10 points.

Oregon State may prove to be Washington’s biggest challenge yet. The Beavers’ two losses this season were both on the road against conference opponents and came by only 3 points each. Their lone home loss in 2022 was also a three-point loss to a strong conference opponent in USC. In 2021, the Beavers were undefeated at home – where they beat the Huskies 27-24.

Their offensive numbers aren’t as gaudy as what Washington is putting out, but Oregon State’s 453.3 yards and 37.9 points per game rank 19th and 14th in Division I, respectively. Defensively, their unit is substantially better than Washington’s in terms of yards and points allowed.

Washington vs Oregon State Predictions

It’s wild that a team like Washington – undefeated, pacing college football in offensive production, and led by one of the most dynamic quarterback threats on the field this season – is an underdog entering their eleventh game of the season against a two-loss opponent. Oregon State gets a slight bump on the lines from being at home, but their being outright favored is a testament to the strength of the PAC12 through their last season together. Washington’s next two opponents – they’ll play rival Washington State on November 25 – are the only teams in the conference that don’t currently have plans to depart by the 2024 season.

This has been the likeliest game on Washington’s schedule to go down as a loss and throw them off their playoff trajectory for a while. Oregon State is a strong team that’s capable of defending their home turf from the Huskies, who’ve had to eke out relatively narrow victories against worse teams in recent weeks. The points could go either way, but there are a lot of reasons to like Oregon State in this one.

Prediction: Oregon State -1.5
