Head-to-Head: Georgia vs Florida State

Florida State enters this game, notoriously, as the first Power 5 team to miss the College Football Playoff after an undefeated season. Part of that was ostensibly a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Jordan Travis, who didn’t play in the team’s last two wins against Florida and Louisville. Backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker spent the latter game sidelined due to concussion precautions and figures to start again in the Orange Bowl, but the Seminoles spent their last two games leaning hard into their ground game and defense regardless.

That’ll be a tough way to win against Georgia, who spend most of the 2023 season on a streak of consecutive wins dating back to the 2021 season. The Bulldogs’ offense ranks 8th in yards per game (482.8) and 9th in scoring (38.4), while their defense allows the tenth-fewest yards (295.2) and ninth-fewest points (16.6) per game. Quarterback Carson Beck – who started every game for the Bulldogs and finished the season with a 169.7 QB rating – has announced his intention to play in the game and return to Georgia in 2024.

The status of other draft-eligible stars for the Bulldogs, including tight end Brock Bowers, has yet to be clarified. Florida State players who have already opted out of the game include receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, running back Trey Benson, tight end Jaheim Bell, edge defender Jared Verse, and defensive lineman Fabien Lovett.

Georgia vs Florida State Predictions

Georgia has two losses on their record since the start of the 2021 season, and only one loss since the start of the 2020 season to a team other than Alabama. Whatever shot the Seminoles had of pulling out an upset in this game took a serious hit when several of their star players chose not to play, and it’ll only get worse if the Bulldogs’ star players currently in limbo decide to suit up. Nothing is certain, but the most likely outcome here is that the Seminoles’ remaining lineup looks overmatched on both sides of the ball against an overwhelming Georgia roster.

Prediction: Georgia -14.5
