Only one team has been an ever present under its current name in NHL history and that is the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens actually precede the NHL, coming into existence in 1909 and winning their first of a record 24 Stanley Cups in 1916, two seasons prior to the formation of the NHL.

Montreal’s legacy is rich with some of the greatest names in NHL history, from Georges Vezina to Howie Morenz to Rocket Richard to Jean Beliveau and Guy Lafleur. But it’s no secret that the Canadiens have fallen on hard times. They were the NHL’s last Canadian-based team to win the Stanley Cup but that was in 1992-93. Montreal hasn’t returned to the Cup final since, twice getting as far as the Eastern Conference final.

The Canadiens of today look nothing like the teams that made the franchise famous, that created the brand of fire wagon hockey that Montreal came to be known for over the years. The Habs haven’t produced an NHL scoring champion since Lafleur in 1977-78, and the franchise’s last two Hart Trophy winners were goalies – Carey Price in 2014-15 and Jose Theodore in 2001-02.
Montreal wins with goaltending, checking and defense and that always makes the Habs an ideal prospect for an under wager on the total. The Canadiens did more to bulk up their attack, acquiring forwards Max Domi and Tomas Tatar and selecting Jesper Kotkaniemi in the first round of the NHL entry draft, and while it hasn’t turn Montreal into a dynamic offensive machine, the Canadiens can now pot enough goals to win more often than not.

The key to their success is Price. While he’s never won a Stanley Cup, Price is the only current NHL goalie who’s been the league’s MVP and he does own an Olympic gold medal. A picture of consistency, he’s the goalie up that and coming pro netminding prospects most tend to model their puckstopping style after.

He makes the Canadiens a safe bet most nights, and when you bet on the Canadiens, why not wager with SugarHouse? You’ll find all the traditional game wagers available, as well as a significant menu of prop markets and live in-game plays.
