The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament involves 64 teams that are seeded from 1 to 16 in each quarter of the bracket. The tournament is known for its unpredictable results, with early-round upsets being as memorable as the champions.

March Madness 9 Seeds generally find themselves right in the middle of the drama with compelling First Round showdowns. With a win, they are likely to earn a date with the 1 seed in Round 2.

Despite the chaos of it all, no 9 seed has won the tournament since it took on its current form in 1985. Wichita State became the only 9 seed to reach the Final Four doing so in 2013.

It’s not all bad news for 9 seeds. In the First Round, they actually have a winning record (76-72) against 8 seeds since 1985. Many people see the 8 vs 9 games as a coin flip and the stats seem to bear that out.

Will we see a 9 seed break precedent this year with a deep run?
