Greta Thunberg Led Betting Odds for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize
Title updated. Content retrospective.
This week the Nobel committee in Oslo, Norway will announce the winner of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. The prize is awarded annually to the individual or organization promoted world peace in the most outstanding nature. The prize committees reveal the scientists, writers and peace workers who in keeping with the vision of Alfred Nobel have created the greatest benefit to mankind. Last year, Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege and human rights activist Nadia Murad jointly won the prize for fighting to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
The official list of nominations is a top-level secret within the organization and speculation about who is in the running always becomes a topic of discussion. There are 301 nominees for this year’s prize, out of which 223 are individuals and 78 are organizations, according to the Nobel Institute.
Sportsbooks and oddsmakers are projecting their favorites for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Leading the pack is Greta Thunberg, who with -200 odds is the favorite in the clear
The 15-year-old began her mission with a school strike outside the Swedish Parliament in August 2018. Little more than a year later over a million people joined her on September 20 where activists protested around the world. Thunberg mainly lead children in school to the battle cry. It was then on September 23 the peace fighter gave a speech at the Climate Action Summit that stated that leaders around the globe were and are lacking active movement to bring an end to climate change. But, despite her popularity seeing her possible win is highly controversial in governing communities due to her disruptive nature. But, if she does win she will be the youngest to win after the current title holder Malala Yousafzai, who took home the prize when she was 17-years-old.
Next on the potential ticket is Abiy Ahmed with +400 odds
The Ethiopian Prime Minister made headlines after instigating the end of two decades of conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. War between the two countries began over border disputes in 1998, five years after Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia. Ahmed took office in mid-2018 and managed to free political prisoners and went on to sign a peace agreement with his Eritrean counterpart Isaias Afwerki.
Another leading contender is Raoni Metuktire with +600 odds. Brazil’s indigenous chief has been protecting the Amazon rainforest his entire life. At the age of 89 he traveled to the 2019 G7 Summit to discuss the Amazon with world leaders after massive fires destroyed large parts of the rainforest. Metuktire has been critical of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro and his exploitation of the Amazon.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has a +1200 for winning. The refugee agency, set up after the Second World War, aims to help displaced people fleeing war and persecution across the world. Its office has received two Nobel Peace Prizes in 1954 and 1984 and they actively made a statement with concern about the Trump administration’s stating a rule that bars the majority of people crossing the southern U.S. land border from seeking asylum.
Other potential Nobel Peace Prize betting stakes at sportsbooks will be:
- Amal Clooney +3300
- Edward Snowden +2000
- Hillary Clinton +2500
- Pope Francis +2000
- Julian Assange +3300
