England vs Japan June 19 Preview

England take on Japan in their last Women’s World Cup group stage at the Stade de Nice in Nice. Both sides are already through to the knockout stages after England beat Argentina and Japan beat Scotland. England currently top the group on six points from two games while Japan sit second having drawn their opening game with Argentina. As a result, should England avoid defeat against the 2011 world champions they will top the group while Japan need a win to finish as leaders.

Both sides will take some confidence from recent meetings to believe they can get a result out of this match. Japan are unbeaten in two of their three meetings with England at the Women’s World Cup and bested them in the semifinals four years ago before losing the final to the United States. England’s only win against Japan at a Women’s World Cup came in the group stages of the 2011 World Cup which Japan went on to win. The English have gotten the better of the Japanese quite recently, however, defeating them 3-0 to win the SheBelieves Cup in March.

England vs Japan June 19 Prediction

Although this is the first big test for both sides, neither are likely to force the issue that much. Sitting pretty at the top, England are likely cede some control to Japan and count on hitting them on the break. Although Japan will want to top the group, one must question if they are willing to lose this game and, as a result, lose some of the momentum that is all so important if one wishes to challenge for this tournament. Expect a draw which both sides will take encouragement from.
