For legal casino and sports gambling near Charlotte, you have to look at two Harrah’s properties: Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River and Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. Under a proposed new law – Senate Bill SB 165 – a North Carolina Lottery Commission would be created. Pari-mutuel betting at licensed venues in Charlotte and beyond would be permitted.

In addition, Bill S 154 would go further and allow brick ‘n’ mortar casinos to open sportsbooks taking single-match bets on professional sports. However, sports betting in Charlotte would be allowed only on casino premises, not on mobile or online, at least by 2020.

North Carolina has some legal casinos from big commercial chains like Harrah’s. But when it comes to horse racing and sports betting, Charlotte and NC are left wanting.

NC has plenty of drag racing and raceway action but not much in the way of horse racing. The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase is held every April in the Charlotte region. The Queen’s Cup is one of six big sporting events held in the area each year.
