Sports Betting in Charleston, SC: Online Sportsbooks

Even pari-mutuel betting in person at tracks in the city is illegal. Thoroughbred horse racing in Charleston isn’t completely banned, however. The Steeplechase of Charleston takes place in November and is one of South Carolina’s most anticipated race days. It closes out the National Steeplechase Association Fall Racing Circuit and has a history stretching back over 200 years.

But following the US Supreme Court ruling on PASPA in 2018, Charleston sports betting fans could get access to legal wagering soon.

The South Carolina State Legislature introduced H 3409/S 57 in 2018. It’s a bill that would allow for the first time pari-mutuel betting on sports, plus casino games like blackjack. It’s an ambitious and coverall bill that will set up a framework for regulated betting in South Carolina for the first time.

In a separate legal battle, the Catawba Indian Nation of South Carolina want to open up the first tribal casino in the state, and could offer legal sports betting if a law ever passed. However, currently the plans are for a Catawba-operated casino to open over the border in North Carolina.
