The Breeders’ Cup is a two-day fall horse racing extravaganza that attracts some of the best racehorses in the world and is often a decider for end of year divisional championships in North America as well as a “stallion maker.”

The Breeders’ Cup program consists of 14 races carrying $30 million in purses and travels each year between different North American tracks. The 2019 edition – the 36th renewal – will be held at Santa Anita Park in Southern California.

In recent years the series billed from its onset as the “world championships” of thoroughbred racing has become one of the most international events in horse racing, thanks in part to a series of “Win and You’re In” prep races around the globe that pay the winner’s entry fees and travel expenses for the main event.

The highlight each year is the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, a 1 ¼-mile race for older horses on the main track, which is often instrumental in deciding Horse of the Year honors. But every race is its own championship, pitting the best horses in their division against one another. The Turf and the Mile, in particular, often attract some of the best turf horses from Europe.

It also creates some difficult handicapping situations that can lead to massive payouts. The French horse Arcangues, for example, paid $269.20 when he won the 1993 Classic.

It’s not surprising, then, that the series plays host to one of the most prestigious handicapping contests of the year, known as the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge. Players can enter directly for $10,000 or by winning qualifying handicapping tournaments. Details can be found at https://www.breederscup.com/bcbc.

This is the 10th time the Breeders’ Cup has been held at Santa Anita. The historic track has expansive grounds well-suited to hosting the series, which frequently draws more than 100,000 fans over the two days of racing. Tickets in reserved seating areas are generally scooped up well before the event, but general admission tickets that give fans access to most areas will be available beginning on Sept. 3.

Date, place, time

The 2019 Breeders’ Cup will be held Friday, Nov. 1,  and Saturday, Nov. 2, at Santa Anita Park, 285 Huntington Drive, Arcadia, California. Post time for the first live race of the card is 11:25 a.m. local time on Nov. 1 and 10:15 a.m. on Nov. 2.

Five Breeders’ Cup races will be run on Nov. 1, all for 2-year-olds  – the Juvenile, the Juvenile Fillies, the Juvenile Turf, the Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Juvenile Turf Sprint – along with other races.

The Nov. 2 card will feature nine Breeders’ Cup races – the Filly & Mare Sprint; the Turf Sprint; the Dirt Mile; the Mile; the Sprint; the Filly & Mare Turf; the Distaff; the Turf; and the Classic.

Breeders’ Cup 2019 Betting odds on the Classic

A little more than two months ahead of the race, the Classic favorite appears likely to be McKenzie, a Bob Baffert-trained 4-year-old who lived up to his reputation by winning the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga in his last start. The versatile Catholic Boy; the veteran campaigner Seeking the Soul; solid 3-year-old Code of Honor; world traveler Thunder Snow; and Pacific Classic winner Higher Power would likely be among the main North American-based contenders if the race was run today.

Where to watch Breeders’ Cup 2019

If you can’t attend in person, the race will be broadcast nationally by NBC Sports. In recent years the network has also live-streamed the race on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. And you can also watch at any off-track betting outlet or racebook that carries Santa Anita Park.

What we learned from 2018

The 2018 running of the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs was one of the more formful editions.

The one biggest Breeders’ Cup upset occurred in the Fillies and Mares Sprint, with Shamrock Rose paying $53.80 to win, but virtually every other race was won by one of the favorites.

One year does not a trend make, however. It could be that handicappers are getting better at assessing talent from distant tracks and overseas, but it’s also entirely possible that the series will return to the mean and produce multiple winners paying $25 or more.

One other thing to be aware of heading into this year’s Breeders’ Cup: Santa Anita has done some extensive renovation to its dirt track after a fatality-plagued meet this winter and spring. Bettors seeking an edge on the competition would be well advised to see how the track is playing when Santa Anita reopens for its fall meet on Sept. 27, as track condition and biases can play a big role in determining the winner of individual races.
