Through five weeks this season, the Bengals (2-3) and Saints (2-3) find themselves with the same record. How those records came to be, however, are two vastly different stories.

For the Bengals, last week’s loss to the Ravens wasn’t just their third loss of the season, it was their third loss by exactly three points. All three losses were decided by field goals – once in overtime and twice as time expired in regulation. Their wins weren’t nearly as close, with the team scoring 27 points against both the Dolphins and Jets while allowing a combined 27 points against them. The record is what it is, but the Bengals have looked competitive in every game and remained largely healthy throughout.

On the Saints’ end, last week’s 39-32 victory over the Seahawks ended a three-game losing streak that saw the team outscored 49-70. They won their first game of the season 27-26 over the Falcons, and in the time since, have hemorrhaged players onto their injury report.

Andy Dalton has started the last two games at quarterback since Jameis Winston has been out with a back injury. Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, and Chris Olave have all missed time at receiver and might not play on Sunday. Alvin Karama has been in and out of the lineup this season and was outgained on the ground against the Seahawks by Taysom Hill – who also accounted for three touchdowns to Kamara’s zero, all on fewer than half as many carries.

On another note, none of the Bengals’ five games this year have gone over the point total. The two teams average a combined 44.6 points per game – this might be the first game of the Bengals’ season to go over, but it’s not likely to be by much.
