Michigan Online Sports Betting Goes LIVE
Online sports betting and casino gambling is officially legal in Michigan – the Michigan Gaming Control Board awarded 15 licenses.
“I’m cautiously optimistic we’re going to have something either this week or the very first part of next week to relay to the public,” Richard Kalm, executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, told the Detroit Free Press.
Michigan launched retail sports betting in March of last year. For an online sportsbook to be legalized inMichigan, the company must be aligned in partnership with one of the 24 tribal casinos or three Detroit casinos located in the state.
Michigan Winfall Could Be Huge
There are currently 15 online sportsbooks that have already teamed up with brick and mortar casinos in Michigan. All of the major players on the American sports betting landscape are situated in Michigan. FanDuel app, DraftKings, BetMGM, William Hill, PointsBet, FoxBet, and WynnBet are among those betting apps expecting big things from the Michigan market.
During the month of December, retail sports betting handle in Michigan was $9.7 million. Since launching last March, the total handle wagered on legalized sports betting is $130.8 million.
Those numbers will be dwarfed by the digits Michiganders are anticipated to generate from online sports betting.
Michigan is the 10th-largest state in the USA in terms of population, with just under 10 million residents. Industry experts are estimating that the first year of online sports betting across the state will generate wagering handle between $400-$650 million. That could mean nearly $100 in tax revenue for the state government.
By comparison, New Jersey, the No. 1 state in terms of online sports betting handle, is expected to have brought in $1 billion in handle when the final numbers for 2020 are tabulated. Through the end of November, New Jersey’s betting handle was at $931.6 million.
Plenty Of Wagering Options for Michiganders
Detroit-based teams in all four of North America’s major sports give passionate Michigan sports fans – of which there are many – plenty of wagering options.
The top sports betting sites have been quick to align themselves with these teams. PointsBet is the official sportsbook of the MLB Detroit Tigers. Both PointsBet and BetMGM are aligned with the NHL Detroit Red Wings, while FanDuel and DraftKings each are partnering with the NBA Detroit Pistons. BetMGM is also the official sports betting partner of the NFL Detroit Lions.
As huge as the following for each of these teams is – and it’s massive – the No. 1 sports franchise in the state is the NCAA Michigan Wolverines. Michigan football is the most followed sports team in the state. Over 100,000 cram into Michigan Stadium for home games at the so-called Big House.
This is an area where Michigan could get a leg up on New Jersey’s betting numbers. New Jersey prohibits betting on in-state college teams. Michigan has no such prohibition on the books.
Again by way of comparison, New Jersey handled $54.2 million on Super Bowl 54. The Garden State took in $106 million in bets on March Madness in 2019.

How it all started?
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a 10-bill package into law that legalizes Internet gaming and sports betting through Michigan’s casinos. The William Hill has started to provide retail sports betting services to Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel and Leelanau Sands Casino in Northern Michigan. Mobile betting apps and promo offers to follow.
While online sports betting was still on hold, brick and mortar sportsbooks opened for business in the Greektown Casino Hotel, Motor City Casino and MGM Grand Detroit on March 11.
Two tribal casinos announced plans to open brick and mortar sportsbooks that were slated to open in the fall of 2020, in partnership with UK gaming giant William Hill. The William Hill Sports Book will be located in the current Onyx Sports Bar at Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel, with a satellite location at Leelanau Sands Casino. Both of these operations are in conjunction with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
As well, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Gaming Authority agreed to terms of a deal with The Stars Group, which runs the FOX Bet sportsbook in the USA. They intend to operate a sportsbook out of the Odawa Casino Resort in Petoskey.
The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians entered into an agreement with Australian sportsbook PointsBet to set up both retail and online sportsbook operation at the Northern Waters Casino in Watersmeet.
FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek, operated by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi entered into partnership with Scientific Games to operate their sportsbook.
None of the last three casinos have set a timetable as to when they anticipate their sports betting apps being operational in Michigan.

Is PointsBet legal in Michigan?
Northern Waters Casino Resort, Michigan, has a partnership with PointsBet app to allow the sportsbook into its casino. Keep in mind that this deal doesn’t mean that it is placing a land-based casino inside of Northern Waters Casino Resort.
Instead, PointsBet has agreed to provide its online services of its sportsbook and casino. With that in mind, it is a separate deal that PointsBet has to operate a retail sportsbook inside the casino. This shows how important online sports betting is to the emerging market, not only for PointsBet, but also for the land-based casinos that want to generate new revenue from these partnerships.
Also, back in July 2020, PointsBet announced a partnership with the Detroit Tigers. This marked the first for an MLB team in the state of Michigan.
Expected Michigan mobile sports betting app in 2021 and further: Draftkings, Barstool, SBK, PlayUP, Pointsbet Michigan, MGM Grand Detroit (legal iPhone, Android), the Score, Unibet MI, William Hill, bet365 MI and more US sportsbooks.

Mobile betting in Michigan
23 tribal and 3 commercial casinos in Michigan can now partner with online sports betting provider to offer people online sports betting apps and sites.
The state of Michigan had bills in place to legalize sports betting, but their former governor vetoed the bills. Luckily for sports betting fans in Michigan, there is a new governor in place and she is in full support of legalizing online betting apps. There is a strong gambling scene in place in Michigan, and it would make sense that legalizing sports betting would be an easy transition.
There is one horse racing app that is legal in Michigan and that is BetAmerica. This app is used in many states throughout the country, and the state of Michigan has given it their full support. If and when sportsbooks launch in Michigan then look for the MGM Grand Detroit to be the first casino to launch a mobile sportsbook app. MGM Grand has a sports betting presence in the United States, and they should be able to get one up and running quickly.
Michigan Casinos and Sportsbooks
Just as with their lottery, the Michigan Casino industry is well-run and has plenty of options available to its players. There are now over twenty casinos operating throughout the state. While many of them are Tribal, there is also a strong showing of private, land-based casinos as well. Casino expansion has been going on few decades in casinos which has allowed other forms of gambling to considered for legalization and expansion. Many believe sports betting is right around the corner and, if it is, there will be plenty of casinos to house the sportsbooks.
Sitting in downtown Detroit, the MotorCity Casino and Hotel is one of three gambling establishments in the city. It is no secret Detroit has seen some tough days over the past few decades but there has been a genuine resurgence in the city and their gambling industry has been there to help. MotorCity is a one stop shop with something for everyone. Everything is available on site. Dining and nightlife, hotel and day spa, live music venue and casino.
The Casino floor is an impressive one as it sits, surrounded by hundreds of slots, filled with a wide variety of table games. There are also VIP lounge, high limit tables and a great poker room. The MotorCity has a great and easy-to-access locale so finding the place and getting around town are not a problem. Detroit is on the up-and-up and so is MotorCity.
Michigan Motor City Casino is expected to launch its online betting app and land-based sportsbook in May 2020.
Four Winds New Buffalo Casino Resort
Located on the westside of the mitten, Four Winds New Buffalo Casino Resort is a fine example of what to expect from a casino these days, even in less populated areas. While this Four Winds is located a short drive from South Bend, the facility has plenty of competition in the area and Four Winds Buffalo has remained highly-regarded despite all this. Their casino is a huge product with plenty to offer players.
Not only are there plenty of slots, table games and a strong poker room but, also, you can find VIP rooms, high-stakes tables, executive hosts and plenty of weekly promotions. They operate a hotel as well as several restaurants, bars, and even a music venue. Four Winds New Buffalo well-represents the direction legal gambling in Michigan is headed and will definitely be a part of it in the future.
Sportsbook apps will be available at Four Winds Casino Sportsbook in Michigan in 2020.
