The second-smallest state in terms of geography at 1,949 square miles, Delaware nonetheless occupies a significant place in the U.S. gambling landscape.
The state was one of just four states that partly exempted from the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, which banned betting on sports.
Once that law was thrown out by the U.S. Supreme Court, it became the first state outside Nevada to authorize full-blown sports betting.

Delaware Off Tracks and Racinos
Sports betting is currently conducted only by Delaware’s three racetracks:
- Delaware Park in Stanton, featuring thoroughbred racing
- Dover Downs in Dover
- Harrington Raceway and Casino in Harrington, both of which stage harness racing.
All three Delaware horse racing tracks are “racinos,” meaning they offer both live racing and gambling on slot machines and other table games. They also offer online poker and casino gaming. Online sports betting has not yet been authorized.
Delaware Park, which opened in 1937, is the state’s marquee track, and offers sizeable purses for its most-prestigious races, like the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap.
