Horse racing in Arkansas has long been a very popular gambling product for the state. The state has two major race tracks in Southland Casino Racing and Oaklawn Racing Casino and even offer online horse betting from websites FanDuel Racing to Twinspires.

Arkansas voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2018 that will bring expanded gambling — including sports betting – to four counties in the state, so expect the wagering landscape to shift soon, by 2023? 

Arkansas offers residents a state lottery, casino-type gambling and horse and dog racing but has strict limits on where the latter two activities can take place – either in the resort town of Hot Springs or on the opposite side of the state in West Memphis. It also has two tribal casinos.

Arkansas is home to a famous horse racing venue: Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

The track built in 1904 generally runs from January through late April or early May each year and hosts the Arkansas Derby, an important stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby.

You may remember that 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones prepped in that race. 

Arkansas also hosts Southland Park Gaming and Racing in West Memphis, which features simulcast horse racing as well as live greyhound racing. It is considered a “racino,” or racetrack casino hybrid that offers video poker and other electronic games defined by state law as “electronic games of skill” and operates 24/7.
