In 1971 Alabama legalized pari-mutuel wagering at horse and dog racetracks. The state had once horse racing track, the Birmingham Race Course, but it closed in 1995. Currently there are three dog racing tracks in Mobile, Macon and Jefferson counties that conduct live racing and allow wagering on horse racing simulcasts from other states. A fourth facility in Greene County, offers simulcasting only.

State laws do not address online wagering, except to outlaw the operation of any type of online gambling website in the state. But because the state allows pari-mutuel betting, numerous advance deposit wagering (ADW) platforms.

Alabama offers limited online horse racing betting sites for residents, but pari-mutuel wagering is legal if not widely available in 2022.
