Mobile betting in Rhode Island
The state of Rhode Island is the most recent state to launch mobile and online sports betting, having done so just in time for the start of the 2019 NFL season. The state of Rhode Island controls the sports betting scene in the state, and they are in charge of the biggest sportsbook app on the market, Sportsbook Rhode Island. This RI sports betting app will be available for download on both Android and Apple devices, but all wagers must be placed while in the state of Rhode Island.
There is a long history of horse and greyhound betting in the state as well, and there are three reputable apps for placing bets on the races listed below. There aren’t many other plans to launch other sportsbook apps in Rhode Island, but Tiverton Casino is working on launching an online betting app, and should be available by 2020.
RI Sports Betting Online Legislation
Like a lot of states on the east coast, Rhode Island has some legalized casino gaming as well as racinos, bingo, and lotteries.
Gaming is overseen by the Department of Business Regulation. They regulate licensing of pari-mutuel betting facilities in the state and also oversee operations at the Twin River Casino-Hotel in Lincoln and Tiverton Casino-Hotel.
Pari-mutuel betting isn’t unusual and this form of pool-type wagering is offered at most US states where single-match gambling is prohibited. However, that has now changed in Rhode Island.
Following the US Supreme Court ruling which overturned PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act), some single-match sports betting was permitted in the state. Just the two casinos mentioned spread legalized sports betting in Rhode Island.
Part of the new law stipulated that sports wagering would be classed as Class III gaming. That could pave the way for other states with tribal casinos to do the same.
In 2019, Senate Bill S 37 was introduced by the Rhode Island State Legislature. It passed on March 25 and will set up a framework for legal sports betting online. Bets will only be taken through approved hosting facilities in the state. Though a proposed mobile app is due later in 2019, gamblers will have to register in person at either of the approved Tiverton or Twin River casinos.
Rhode Island has started out tentatively with legalized sports betting. But with neighboring New York also pushing on with legislation, Rhode Island doesn’t want to be left behind.
