You are allowed to play the lottery, DFS, and at land-based casinos in Maine. However, placing sports bets and gambling sites online are still outlawed in 2021.
Maine looked set to permit sports betting, but the move was quashed at 4th and one at the goal line. As a result, Maine online gambling and land-based gambling includes the lottery, casino gaming, and daily fantasy sports.
To enter a casino or play poker, you must meet the Maine legal age of gambling, 21-years-old, but you can bet on horse racing, the lottery, and bingo from 18-years-old.
Maine has yet to get approved legal sports betting. The only two legal casinos in Maine are horse racetracks, but they look more like casinos than anything. Maine also features a lottery and seems to currently allow daily fantasy sports. We expect several gambling sites become legal in Maine: William Hill, Pointsbet and other online platforms.
Maine doesn’t permit you to play at online casinos. While the Pine Tree State has actively sought to change its gambling legislation in recent years, online casino gaming hasn’t been on the agenda. So, online casinos in Maine haven’t been made legal yet and aren’t regulated by the state.
The Maine betting options on land, however, are a bit better. The state has three gambling venues in the form of the Oxford Casino, the Hollywood Casino Bangor racino, and the Native American-run Penobscot High Stakes Bingo hall.
Maine doesn’t permit you to bet on sports. As it stands, sports betting in Maine is still illegal, even though the bill officially passed legislature approval.
At the end of 2019, the sports betting bill looked set to come into law, but the governor delayed her decision into 2020. It was then vetoed by the governor, the House voted to overrule the veto, but then the governor lobbied to keep sports betting in Maine illegal.
As such, you will have to wait and see what Maine decides to do in 2021 regarding regulated sports betting.
Maine doesn’t permit you to play online poker. Online poker is often bundled into online casino gambling law, which appears to hold true in the Maine online gambling scene. While standing law doesn’t expressly prohibit online poker or other gambling via the internet, it is assumed that land-based restrictions apply to the online space.
That said, there are still ways to play live poker in Maine. The casinos host a fair few poker tables and will run cash games and poker tournaments. You’re also allowed to play social poker games, provided that the people involved aren’t making a profit.
Maine permits you to bet on daily fantasy sports. Unlike many other states, Maine is very clear on its stance towards daily fantasy sports: DFS is legal in the Pine Tree State. For the last few, years, you have been allowed to bet on your DFS lineups across a vast range of sports.
Overseen by the Gambling Control Unit, platforms like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fantasy Draft enable you to access a form of Maine online gambling. On these sites, you can bet on lineups for the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, CFL, and even in MMA and NASCAR.
Maine doesn’t permit you to be on esports. Sports betting isn’t allowed in the state yet, so esports betting in Maine is also presently outlawed. While sports betting doesn’t always include esports betting, the betting bill in Maine did specifically address esports betting.
Maine permits you to play the lottery. The Maine Lottery brings you tri-state lottery games as well as national games. To play with Vermont and New Hampshire, you can get a ticket for Pick 3 or Megabucks Plus, or you can play lottery goliaths like Lucky for Life and Powerball.
Although only harness racing takes place in Maine, betting on horse racing is legal here. At off-track betting facilities and harness racing venues, you can watch simulcast thoroughbred races from elsewhere in America. Parimutuel wagers are available to you, while online sportsbook BetAmerica accepts bettors from the Pine Tree State.
