Iowa casinos go back some time now and the first of them began to crop up in the early nineties. They’ve been adding more and more ever since and there are now over 20 casinos throughout the state. What began as a few riverboats have now grown into a wide variety of strong casino offerings, from the Tribal Casino to the new and improved land-based facilities. Iowa looks to be moving on other fronts as well with legislation in the works for online gambling as well as legal sports gambling. Time will tell when and if these issues progress further but, for now, the state has plenty of casinos to keep Iowans busy.

How Iowa sports betting was evolving

(retrospective)

Iowa gambling has long been confined to pari-mutuel racetracks and casinos. Currently, in Iowa, online casinos, online poker, and other forms of online gambling for money are banned. The state has shown no appetite for legalizing internet gaming like other states such as Delaware, New Jersey, and Nevada.

And until 2019, the chances of online gambling and sports betting becoming legal seemed remote. That comes despite pari-mutuel betting on greyhounds and horse racing has been available in Iowa since the 1980s. Bills proposing legalized online betting in Iowa failed in 2012 and 2013.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the veracity of PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) in 2018, an Iowa sports betting bill has looked like being more of a prospect. In fact, Iowa Bill HF2448 had already been introduced by the time PASPA – a law banning bets on single-match sports contests – was reversed.

The bill related to the setting up of gambling licenses for the purposes of sports betting in Iowa. Bill HF2448 was delayed but could be adjusted. And in early 2019, UK bookmaker William Hill signed a deal with Iowa’s Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino in preparation for any new online sports betting legislation.

The Iowa sports betting bill would allow for sports bets to be accepted at Iowa’s land-based casinos. Online sportsbook apps will also be permitted. Wagers on college and professional sports will be permitted, but casinos will have to pay $25,000 to apply for a license to provide sports betting in Iowa.

Both the Iowa Gaming Association and Iowa state lottery are keen for any new sports betting laws. But the future is uncertain for Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) sites which are currently prohibited in Iowa.
