Indiana Online Casino FAQs:

Can I play online casino games in Indiana?

Under current gaming law in Indiana, you can only play casino games and slots in land-based casinos. Online casinos are still prohibited but you can make legal sports bets through licensed online sportsbooks.

However, that fact of life is in the process of changing within the Hoosier State. State Senator Jon Ford, a Terre Haute Republican, has introduced legislation intended to legalize online casino betting.

Senate Bill 417 would permit the 14 casinos and racinos located across the state to offer internet casino games and online poker. This includes the planned Rocksino by Hard Rock in Terre Haute, Ford’s hometown. That casino is slated for a 2022 opening. The casinos would need to apply for an additional license in order to offer an online casino and online poker.

Ford is hopeful that he will get a hearing on the bill sometime early in 2021.

At the same time within the Indiana Statehouse, State Senator Susan Glick, an Indianapolis Republican, introduced a Bill separate from Ford’s Bill. Senate Bill 267 would authorize wagering on video gaming terminals.

Is online casino legal in Indiana at all?

No. As of 2021, online casino betting is not legal in the state of Indiana. If Ford’s Bill moves forward, that landscape could change rather quickly, however. Still, it would likely take a minimum of a year for the Bill to be passed into law. There are procedural steps that all Bills must be put through before they can be considered for approval into law.

After that process is completed, the state’s government would need to establish a regulatory process and develop rules to govern online casino wagering across Indiana.

The fact that online and mobile sports betting are already legal within the state of Indiana should make it feasible for the steps to legalize online casino and online poker to move ahead more seamlessly, since there’s already groundwork laid from the development of the sports betting process and a regulatory body is in place to govern over these new forms of gambling.

The desire among some Indiana government officials to fast track online casino and poker is easily understandable. The Indiana Gaming Commission revealed that in December 2020, sports betting took in $313 million in handle last month.

Those numbers shattered the previous record handle of $251 million that was generated in November. The state government collected $2.3 million in tax revenue for December. Over the course of the year, Indiana’s retail and online sportsbooks produced $13.2 million for the state coffers.

Is mobile gambling allowed in Indiana?

You can place legal sports bets in Indiana through your mobile phone or tablet. However, it’s not possible in 2020 to play real money slots or table games on your mobile device.

How old do I have to be to play casino games in Indiana?

You must be aged 21 or over to gamble on slots and table games in an Indiana casino. It’s likely that you’ll have to be 21 to play online and provide proof of ID and age before you start gambling.
