After years of pressure from Tribal groups and fans, Washington’s NFL team has finally bowed to sponsor pressure and said it will change its name.
While the announcement of that new moniker is still forthcoming, the new nickname is apparently already decided, and is delayed by trademark issues.
Newsweek has posted this article with betting odds for the new name, which are as follows:
- Washington Redtails +300
- Washington Presidents +300
- Washington Generals +400
- Washington Lincolns +600
- Washington Veterans +800
- Washington Americans +1000
- Washington Memorials +1000
- Washington Monuments +1000
- Washington Kings +1200
- Washington Roosevelts +1200
- Washington Redhawks +1500
The year 2020 will go down in history for many reasons, but the move towards equality for all people of the earth is a welcome one. But there are still many nicknames of teams, in the professional, collegiate, and high school ranks, that are offensive to Native American people.
So which professional team will be the next to change its name?
The odds on favorite are the Cleveland Indians, who have also been subject to decades-long pressure from groups to change their logo (which they did in 2016) and their name. Another Major League Baseball team, the Atlanta Braves, could be next as well.
Team officials have not come out and said the team would change names, but want fans to stop doing the infamous “Tomahawk Chop” whenever they are finally let back into stadiums.
In the NFL, the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City now has a spotlight on its nickname, the Chiefs. While in the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks also use Native American imagery, but have come out with this statement after Washington announced its change:
“The Chicago Blackhawks name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois’ Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans and the public.”
So which team will it be?
Most of the betting odds and predictions show that it is Cleveland that will ultimately be the one to follow Washington, especially since the team had some former names, and also another franchise called the Spiders. There is now some pressure from inside the organization as well as outside, so that bodes well finally for the change.

It may not be for a year, but Cleveland should be next, with other teams following.
