North Carolina Horse Racing Betting

North Carolina has some of the strictest anti-gambling laws in the nation, which state that it is illegal for any person or organization to operate a game of chance or to play or bet on any game of chance that involves winning money, property or anything of value.

The only exceptions are casinos on Indian reservations and bingo and raffles if they are sponsored by nonprofit organizations.

The Tar Heel State once had live dog racing and video poker, but both were later outlawed.

The state also is one of just five that explicitly prohibit conducting live horse races, so don’t even think about attending a race in the state, let along betting on it.

Because of the state’s strict laws, no providers of advance deposit wagering, which enables betting on pari-mutuel racing via the telephone or internet, licensed in other states provide service to North Carolina residents.

That means unlicensed and lightly regulated offshore betting websites are the only option to North Carolinians looking to place a bet.
