The Peace Garden State restricts casino gambling to Native American reservations, but allows wagering on both horse and dog races, a state lottery and other forms of gambling as well, including tests of skill, pull-tab games and sports pools operated by charitable organizations.

North Dakota is home to two horse racing tracks offering live racing during short summer meetings: Chippewa Downs in Belcourt and the North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo, both of which offer both thoroughbred and quarter horse races. The latter is operated by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

It also has a small number of simulcast wagering outlets in Belcourt; Bismarck; Fargo; and Grand Forks where horse players can bet.

North Dakota law now only authorizes advance deposit wagering, which allows residents to bet on horse races via the telephone or internet.
