Racing betting in PA

The Keystone State has been making up for lost time when it comes to legal gambling. Pennsylvania now authorizes casino gambling, a state lottery, pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing, card rooms, bingo, and games of chance conducted by nonprofit organizations and taverns under certain circumstances.

Pennsylvania sports betting generated nearly $36 million in handle and $3 million in revenue. Rivers and SugarHouse both neared $8 million in handle. PA also enacted legislation in 2017 explicitly legalizing online gambling.

Apart from a state lottery approved in 1971, Pennsylvania had almost no legal gambling until legislators approved the Pennsylvania Racehorse Development and Gaming Act, which legalized casinos and racetracks within the state.

The move established Pennsylvania as a thoroughbed racing state and also helped establish the state as an important breeding center.

Today the state has three thoroughbred racetracks, all of them “racinos” that also offer casino-style gambling – Parx Racing (formerly Philadelphia Park) in Bensalem; Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Grantville; and Presque Isle Downs outside Erie.

It also conducts standardbred harness racing at Harrah’s Philadelphia Racetrack; the Meadows Racetrack in Washington; and Pocono Downs in Wilks-Barre.
