The 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational will be the penultimate PGA Tour event in advance of this year’s PGA Championship, the first major to take place since the coronavirus pandemic.
Golf’s best and brightest travel to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, in pursuit of their share of the $10.5 million prize purse, with Jon Rahm leading the way as narrow favorite with the bookmakers.
The Spaniard is listed as a +1100 (12.00) leader at William Hill for New Jersey betting customers, though Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas sit just off the pace at +1200 (13.00) apiece.
Rahm is fresh off of a victory at The Memorial in mid-July, but the no-cut format at TPC Southwind combined with a field deep in star talent means he’ll be hard pressed to remain in the No. 1 seat.
FedEx St. Jude Invitational Dates, Info
- Dates: Thursday, July 30 – Sunday, August 2
- First Tee: 10 a.m. ET (3 p.m. BST)
- Course: TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee
- Par: 70
And of all those dark horses looking to break out, Xander Schauffele poses the right mixture of form and style match to make a mark in the tournament. The +2200 (23.00) selection has clinched three of his four PGA Tour victories at no-cut competitions, not to mention he’s among the top five players in total strokes gained over the last 24 rounds at par-70 courses.
Schauffele, 26, recovered from a disastrous beginning at The Memorial to tie for 13th, and analyst Justin Ray praised the Californian’s habit for performing well on difficult courses:
From +8 through 13 holes to a tie for 13th place. Impressive turnaround for Schauffele, who has excelled on difficult courses as a pro. Led field in SG off the tee this week.— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) July 20, 2020
His three U.S. Open finishes: 5th, 6th, 3rd. Should be on the short list at Winged Foot. https://t.co/Mmu9T8xSf1
TPC Southwind certainly ranks up there with the harder venues on the Tour and poses a serious water hazard to those not taking proper care.
Schauffele is otherwise a +400 (5.00) pick to finish among the top five at the St. Jude Invitational, or +200 (3.00) to end 10th or higher.
Defending champion Brooks Koepka could become the first person to win back-to-back titles at the WGC event since Tiger Woods clinched three in a row between 2005 and 2007.
Woods won’t be present in Memphis but is expected to return in time for the PGA Championship, by which point Schauffele will hope to have a fifth Tour victory under his belt.
Prediction: Xander Schauffele to win
