Prediction: Lewis Hamilton to win (-200)
Mercedes star Hamilton retains a 47-point lead at the F1 summit despite finishing seventh in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, where he was served a penalty after being called in for a stop when the pit lane was closed. Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly stole in to seal his maiden Formula 1 victory as Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll completed a rare-looking podium, per motorsports writer Ben Hunt:
Wonderful stuff from Pierre Gasly, who wins the Italian GP. Sainz in second. Stroll in third. Bottas P5. Hamilton P7. Verstappen DNF, Vettel DNF, Leclerc DNF.— Ben Hunt (@benjhunt) September 6, 2020
It’s very likely we’ll see something a lot closer to the usual equilibrium restored in the ninth race of the 2020 season, with Hamilton having won five of the previous six races prior to Monza. This week’s preparation will be eased by the short trip to Mugello, which will host its first-ever Formula 1 race as part of the restructured 2020 season.
Hamilton remains the leader at short odds of -200 with Unibet for New Jersey customers, a result that should be delivered lest the Briton suffer the same kind of unforeseen setbacks witnessed last time out. Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas follows at +425, while +550 Max Verstappen is the only other driver to fall below odds of +4000 despite the recent surprise in Italy.
Shocking are the odds linked with Ferrari’s top names following a pair of non-finishes at Monza, with Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel listed at +1200 and +2000, respectively, to finish among the top three in Tuscany.
There could be something in those prices as Ferrari prepare for their 1000th Formula 1 race at Mugello, which also serves as the constructor’s testing track.
Gasly, a first-time winner at Monza, isn’t fancied to follow up with a second straight success and returns to massive odds of +8000 to win this Sunday, or +900 to take a place on the podium.
Barring any surprises, we should see Hamilton reclaim his spot at the head of the field and beef up his cushion at the head of the leaderboard, though the field looks more open as to who might complete the top three.
