It’s often the case that elite tennis superstars form a particularly fruitful connection with one Grand Slam in particular; for Novak Djokovic, that tournament is the Australian Open.
The Serb has won in Melbourne on eight occasions and is +140 frontrunner to win three consecutive Australian Open titles for the second time in his career, with this year’s contest beginning February 8. But if one contender from the field looked like the man to cut short his reign, it’s Russian rival Daniil Medvedev a +475 pick at Unibet USA.
Of the last four meetings between the pair, Medvedev has emerged as victor in three, including a 6-3, 6-3 success at the 2020 ATP Tour Finals in December:
Djokovic has an intimidating record of titles in the Australian Grand Slam—at least two more than nearest rival, Roger Federer—but he’s also exited in the early rounds of recent appearances (fourth round in 2018, second round in 2017).
Medvedev’s stock, meanwhile, is only on the rise as he looks to reach his second major final, with the competitive record to suggest he can best the world No. 1 should they meet Down Under.
