Picks: Alexander Povetkin Defeats Dillian Whyte March Fight—Again (+270) – Odds via William Hill and bet prediction by the sportsbook.
Alexander Povetkin shocked the boxing world once when he beat Dillian Whyte in August 2020, but the sportsbooks have rounded on the Russian once again in time for their rematch.
In a bout that was originally scheduled to take place in November, Povetkin will attempt to make it two wins from two meetings against Whyte (27-2) on March 27. The WBC interim heavyweight title will once again be up for grabs, with Whyte returning as a -340 favorite with William Hill USA.
However, there’s a strong urge to hedge bets on the “if he did it once” side of logic and favor +270 underdog Povetkin (36-2-1), who responded well to a fourth-round knockdown to finish Whyte in the fifth last summer.
The fact their November date was cancelled after Povetkin returned a positive COVID-19 test could work against the Russian if he has any long-lasting symptoms as a result. However, there’s still plenty of reason to believe in a fighter whose only two defeats to date came against high-quality opponents in Wladimir Klitschko (2013) and Anthony Joshua (2018).
Joshua is the man responsible for Whyte’s only other loss, with Povetkin hoping to repeat his upset and record back-to-back upsets. Although the moneyline odds are significant, Sasha appeals even more at +350 to score another KO/TKO win, given a decision result at 41 years of age looks less likely:
That being said, Povetkin does boast a lot more experience fighting over 12 rounds heading to Gibraltar, and a decision win in his favor returns a very attractive +1200.
