A unique run-up to the 2020 NFL season couldn’t derail the league’s plans for a September 10 start, and the prediction count is running at record numbers ahead of the Week 1 kick-off.
The Kansas City Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in half a century last season, and Andy Reid’s men begin the defence of their crown with a visit from the Houston Texans.
Opening-week jitters have been a concern for the Texans, who have lost their first fixture in each of the past three seasons. Kansas City, on the other hand, are making a habit of starting strong and have won their past five Week 1 matchups.
It’s little wonder the Chiefs are tipped to cover the spread with William Hill USA and extend that opening-round run. Kansas City also topped this fixture 51-31 when these two teams met in last season’s divisional play-off, but the Texans will hold onto the fact they’ve won two of the last three regular-season encounters.
Another Week 1 clash drawing plenty of attention sees Tom Brady start his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a visit to NFC South rivals the New Orleans Saints. The Bucs have lost in each of their last three meetings with New Orleans—including two regular-season defeats in 2019—but hope the winning experience of stars like Brady and Rob Gronkowski will reverse the tide.
Speaking of the six-time Super Bowl winner, Brady’s former employers, the New England Patriots, welcome the Miami Dolphins to Foxborough opening week, with intrigue circling over who will start as quarterback in a new era for Bill Belichick & Co.. The Pats will be counted as favorites whether Jarrett Stidham or Cam Newton takes the first snap, while Miami will view this as a chance to make an early statement in intimidating surroundings.
