The basketball calendar for the remainder of the year looks clearer following the coronavirus lockdown, with confirmation that the 2020 NBA Draft will take place on October 15 if all goes to plan. Betting odds predictions and free bets bonuses are already offered by the US sportsbooks in Indiana, Colorado, NJ and PA.
Fans won’t know the order of picks until the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery—scheduled to take place on June 25—where the eight teams whose seasons have been ended early are likely to get early selections.
Zion Williamson was the clear No. 1 pick in 2019, but there are numerous prospects in the running to be drafted first this year in the absence of a standout star to the same standard.
Franchises may choose players in accordance with their needs or simply opt for the best talent available at the time, but three starlets in particular stand out from the crowd. New Jersey residents can wager on which player will be first off the block with PlaySugarHouse, and we’ve taken a wild crack at predicting where the most sought-after stars will end up in 2020 using Tankathon’s Draft Lottery simulator.
Predictions for 2020 NBA Draft
- Anthony Edwards, SG. – Golden State Warriors
- Obi Toppin, PF. – Minnesota Timberwolves
- James Wiseman, C. Predicted Destination – Cleveland Cavaliers
Anthony Edwards, SG. Predicted Destination: Golden State Warriors
Anthony Edwards is the odds leader to go No. 1 in the draft with the bookmakers, and the Golden State Warriors are guaranteed to get a top-five pick, in accordance with the lottery rules implemented in 2019.
The Athletic’s Anthony Slater reported the Warriors haven’t been able to set up a meeting with the Georgia freshman as of yet, but that should change closer to July. Edwards has stood out as an 18-year-old, 6’5” guard who generates explosive plays, although it’s possible the Warriors trade up unless they land the first overall selection.
It would be difficult for any franchise to ignore the odds leader if they do get assigned that top spot, with the Warriors wary of the ageing figures of incumbent guards Steph Curry, 32, and Klay Thompson, 30.
James Wiseman, C. Predicted Destination: Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers were awarded a No. 2 pick in our simulated draft, and the franchise’s priority must be improving a defense that’s had two historically bad seasons back-to-back.
James Wiseman comes in at a monstrous 7’1” and has the tools to help an ailing backcourt, particularly if Andre Drummond’s future at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse is even slightly in doubt.
The former Memphis center is as much of a question mark as any other draft prospect considering he played just three college games prior to being suspended by the NCAA. However, the entire class of 2020 is somewhat clouded given this year’s disruptions, and Wiseman’s physical prowess alone makes him hard to ignore in the high picks.
Obi Toppin, PF. Predicted Destination: Minnesota Timberwolves
Obi Toppin sits among the middle ground of highly touted picks who could rise or fall in the draft order depending on who lands where in the lottery and what they decide to prioritise.
The 22-year-old has a doctorate in dunking and looks ready for the NBA standard after he was named the Citizen Naismith Player of the Year, ready to help a Minnesota Timberwolves roster that’s open to improvement.
Bridging the holes to help guide a flourishing link-up between Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell is a chief concern, and Toppin strikes as a solid foil to take some of the burden off that duo.
