2020 BMW Championship Predictions, Betting Picks: Daniel Berger to Surge in FedEx Cup Playoffs

Dustin Johnson conjured up his best after waltzing to the win at the Northern Trust, but the arrival of the 2020 BMW Championship promises even greater drama in the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The PGA Tour heads to Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois where another stack of elite stars renew the process all over again, with Johnson in particular setting a high bar for what’s to be expected.

We may as well get it out of the way early, however: there is little to no chance “DJ” will be able to replicate his Northern Trust performance in such a tight turnaround. That’s not a slight against the incumbent FedEx Cup points leader but more so high praise for just what rare a display of golf he enjoyed at TPC Boston.

Johnson—a two-time winner of this competition—returns to a 70-strong field as the +800 favorite to win this year’s BMW Championship with Borgata bonus, but the world No. 1 holds little value considering he’s coming off such a strong showing.

2020 BMW Championship Preview

Instead, Daniel Berger receives our backing as the one to watch out for in Olympia Fields having enjoyed such consistent form throughout 2020. The 27-year-old won the Charles Schwab challenge in June—the first tournament held after the coronavirus suspension—and has finished third or better in three of his five tournament appearances since, per golf writer Daniel Rapaport:

There’s good value still to be had with Berger as a +2000 bet, the Florida native having displayed excellent recent form with his irons and approach play in general. The North Course looks as though it’s set up to favor the big hitters on the circuit (featuring only two par-fives), but some tall rough adds a more nuanced dimension that should still yield yardage to a shrewd shooter like Berger.

Some tidying in regards to his putting might have already netted him another win or two this season, but the momentum has been building towards grander achievements in recent months. Few players rank superior in tee-to-green strokes, and the demanding par-four structure in particular is a range that suits his play.

A bigger-value pick worthy of a small punt is Cameron Champ, who is +6700 at Borgata and won the 2016 OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields when he was a junior at Texas A&M.

Prediction: Daniel Berger to win (+2000)
