2019 Tony Awards Facing New Betting Odds with Big Surprises

On June 10, the theater world may be dancing around some big surprises and upsets when the 73rd annual Tony Awards airs.

For the first time in many years it has recently been reported from industry insiders that they think ballot votes will be full of non-conventional wins and many favorites not taking home the gold.

Ever since the runaway hit “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which was the assumed favorite for Best Play, was knocked out of contention those with voting power have been scratching their heads with wonder. It is also making the sportsbooks light up with odds shifting. It is now assumed that the engrossing play “Ferryman” will win and is a safe bet.

Best Musical is thought of on The Golden Way as the biggest category to win – think of it like Best Picture at The Academy Awards. The smart wager is considered to be “Hadestown” over audience favorite “Tootsie.” The simple problem with “Tootsie” is that most insiders think the show runs long in length and that alone can kick it out of the win.  A Tony means that when the show is traveling off Broadway it is destined to make money – unless the show runs long in stage time. It is widely considered that shows that are over a certain time lack audience approval when off Broadway and traveling across America. Theater owners and roadies vote – and they want money in their pockets as much as those betting on the awards.

Certain other categories looking at golden wagers include Best Actor in play to Bryan Cranston for “Network,” Stephanie J. Block for Best Actress in a musical for “The Cher Show,” and another obvious win for first-time Tony nominee Bob Mackie for his brightly designed costumes in “The Cher Show.”
